‘The Walking Dead’ are coming…

By now you’ve heard the Mayans predicted that the world is coming to an end in 2012. Experts and prognosticators will try and explain what exactly will happen and what the world will look like afterwards. But fans of The Walking Dead already know exactly what the end looks like; a Zombie Apocalypse! Whether you are a fan of the original Graphic Novels or of the hit TV show, the apocalypse has never been so exciting.

Imagine waking up in the hospital. You have no idea why you are there. You gather your strength to call for help, but no one comes. Eventually you make it to your feet and unhook yourself from all the medical equipment. The hospital is abandoned. From the looks of it, it’s been empty for quite some time. You make your way down to the cafeteria which appears to contain some life. You pry open the double doors and are instantly met by the terrible sight and smell of a room full of zombies! You stumble backwards. Unfortunately every zombie in the room has smelled your presence and would enjoy eating your delicious flesh. Fortunately for you, the undead are not very agile and you burst out of the hospital and into the brisk fall air and safety.

Your relief quickly turns to despair as you take in the world around you. What has happened? This is your town, but where are all the people? Why are all the cars abandoned and most of the windows broken? You must find your family. You scramble home, avoiding the lurking zombies. Your family is not there. You just know they are alive. You can sense it. But where can they be? How do you even begin to look for them?

Ahead of the Season Three premiere of the TV series, the library is hosting a party on October 11th to celebrate all things ‘Walking Dead.’ Stop by to check out the latest graphic novels in the series, meet other fans, and test your knowledge of the show. There will also be themed prizes for the trivia winners and a raffle for ‘Walking Dead’ action figures.

The Mayans and the End of the World: By Tony Perona

Whenever someone finds out my latest book, the thriller THE FINAL MAYAN PROPHECY, is about December 21, 2012 and the end of the Mayan calendar on that date, they ask if it really means the end of the world.

I don’t want to talk too much about the book and give away the end because I hope you’ll read it 🙂 –so let me answer it in a completely different way. Let’s take a look at some of the more popular ways people are predicting the earth will be destroyed in 2012, some in conjunction with this Mayan end date:

  1. Asteroid hits earth: According to recent reports from NASA, the odds of a really big asteroid hitting the earth in the next 28 years are 1:625. That’s .0016 or .16%, or way less than a 1% chance, and that’s within 28 years.
  2. Nuclear war: The Doomsday Clock sits right now at 5 minutes to midnight. The closer the clock is to midnight, the closer the world is estimated to be to global nuclear disaster. (All of this is according to Wikipedia, not always reliable but as best as I can tell, is accurate in this case.) The latest adjustment, made on January 10, advanced the clock one minute to its present position. To me, that means nuclear war is a little more possible (1.67% more; one minute more out of 60) than it was last year, when we successfully escaped global disaster, so, rounding up, I’d go with maybe 2% as the odds for global nuclear destruction. Keep in mind, I’m no statistician.
  3. Solar flare sends us back to the Stone Age: According to a report in last month’s Christian Science Monitor, which gets this information from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, “When aimed at Earth, strong solar flares and CMEs [Coronal Mass Ejections] …  can pose a danger to astronauts and satellites in space, as well as power grids, navigation and communications systems on Earth.” Reporter Amina Khan, writing in the Los Angeles Times, quoted space weather scientist Mike Hapgood at the Rutherford  Appleton Observatory near Oxford, England about the odds of this happening,. “A recent paper (published in February in the journal Space Weather) tried to estimate the chance … and came up with a value of a 12 percent chance of it happening in the next 10 years.” It’s probably not technically correct for me to average this over ten years, but if I did, it’d be a 1.2% chance each year.

So, after looking at these scenarios, I think the odds are small that December 21, 2012 will be the end of time.

Did the Mayans think that way? My personal philosophy is always one of great hope, that even out of the worst situations, good emerges. To find out if and how I carry this through the plot of THE FINAL MAYAN PROPHECY, you’ll need to read it. I thank you if you do.

The Hunger Games event at Rave!

Who’s excited about the seeing The Hunger Games this week? Personally, I am over the moon about watching the big screen adaptation of the book by Suzanne Collins. I was obsessed with the story when I first read the book and would discuss it at length to anyone who would listen. Would I volunteer as a tribute? My strategy if I were to participate in the Games? Peeta vs. Gale? You name it, I talked about it. Many years after reading the book, I’m still in love with the story. As we get closer to the movie release, it’s hard to find someone that hasn’t heard of the series. Are you planning to see the movie when it comes out on Friday, March, 23rd? If so, the library would like to sweeten the experience!

The Plainfield Public Library will have a table at Rave Motion Pictures in Plainfield on Friday, March 23rd. If you’re there to see the movie between 5-7pm, stop by the table and show your Plainfield library card. Winter Reading Club 2012: Be a Smart Cookie!

It’s no secret I’m a cookie fanatic. I rarely turn down a cookie, especially if there’s chocolate involved. Chocolate chunk, snicker doodle, sugar, peanut butter, no-bake, you name it, I’m game. Throw in a glass of ice cold milk and I’m all set.

Are you drooling on your keyboard about right now? Good! The reason I’ve got cookies on my mind is because of the library’s Winter Reading Club theme, Be A Smart Cookie – Read! What’s the Winter Reading Club, you ask? It’s a winter-long reading program that encourages people of all ages to read during the winter months (Jan. 14 – Feb. 29).

Adults, teens and children can register for the Winter Reading Club online at www.plainfieldlibrary.net. Once you start logging your books in your online reading log you will automatically be entered for a chance to win the grand prize. The adult grand prize is a Kindle, the teen prize is a bundle of gift cards to Hot Topic, Rave, Starbucks and Cold Stone, and the children’s grand prize is a Winter Reading gift basket full of goodies. Throughout the Winter Reading Club we will be doing random prize drawings for Papa Murphy’s Pizza cookie dough tubs, too!
